Logos and Fonts

It is vital for a magazine to have a good logo and font in order to be successful in building a brand and creating instant recognition within my target audience. Sometimes a magazine’s font also serves as its logo, which is the case with Life magazine.

Other times, a magazine has both a logo and a specific type of font that represents the company, which is the case for the National Geographic magazine.

When I think of my magazine title, Compass, and my magazine as a whole, I feel as though it needs both a logo and a certain type of font due to the title’s association with a concrete object. Therefore, I designed my logo on a sheet of paper in which it resembles a compass, specifically, it looks life a three-dimensional asterisk with circle outline behind it. I plan to make the dot in the middle of the asterisk be a bright light blue color as well as the circle outline behind the asterisk. Within the asterisk, the darker parts would be black, while the parts that were not shaded would be white. As for the font, I first tried writing the title in a calligraphy fashion; however, I felt as though it did not match the essence of my magazine nor did it seem very noteworthy. I then tried to make the font more in the style of a font called Times New Roman. As seen in the picture below, marked with a happy face on the left side, the font that resembles more like Times New Roman resonated the feeling I was striving to achieve, in which the font is distinct and striking. Both the logo and the font suit the name, Compass, and the tone of my magazine: classy, respectable, and trustworthy.
